Route 2nd: Make your app free and earn using in-app advertising. It’s a popular way to earn money. You can use Google’s own adversting service AdMob or TapJoy’s service TapJoy There are other bunch of programs available for advertising your apps.

How much can you earn ? : Till depends on your app and its usability. We submitted a game app 4 months ago and we have made a total of $5,700 till now and that only with two versions of apps launched till now.
